The Coal Road
02:01
|
|||
I'm walking the Coal Road home
With its ancient walls so high
I cannot see not left nor right
But I'm walkin' the Coal Road
Prayin' these old stone walls lead me home tonight
Many come this road before
Made their way under the orange lights
But who's to say their way is mine?
So I'm walking the Coal Road
Prayin' these old stone walls lead me home tonight

When Night Comes Down
03:54
|

She is a tower she is tall
Head and shoulders above the world
And there is strength inside her walls
But some would say she's got no soul
But I've been there when the night comes down
And the last four wheels disappear from sound
Out of the dark the wind shook the trees
I could have sworn that I heard her speak
She said: 'You weren't supposed to see me like this
With my mighty streets filled with emptiness
When the workers all go I ain't got much left
But you weren't supposed to see me like this'
She is a rock, oh she is strong
Rooted to the same old spot for so damn long
And she won't be moved one inch
There she'll remain just as long as she lives
But I've been there when the night comes down
And no one's impressed when there's no one around
Out of the dark the wind struck my face
I coulda sworn that I heard her say:
'You weren't supposed to see me like this
With my mighty streets filled with emptiness
When the workers all go I ain't got much left
But you weren't supposed to see me like this.'

Rear View Mirror
02:47
|
|||
Down on the fast road out of the city
Driving like you're out of your mind
You don't see nobody else
You're gonna leave them all for dust behind
Cos this old town's been driving you crazy
You're heading for an early grave
And you've been so high strung they say
You'll have a heart attack some day
So get on out of here, south of the river
No second thought, no rear view mirror
Don't stop, don't look, don't think
Just drive over me
But I'll stick around, at least for a while
Listen to the sound of your motor fading out
And i'll try not to think about you
Don't you think about me
And you will go just to be replaced
Another soul to be sacrificed
You catch a glimpse of their eye as they pass you by
A-heading for the city lights
So get on out of here, south of the river
No second thought, no rear view mirror
Don't stop, don't look, don't think
Just drive over me
But I'll stick around, at least for a while
Listen to the sound of your motor fading out
And i'll try not to think about you
Don't you think about me

He was born to this world of another time
Some would say a crying shame
Roaming like the last lone buffalo on the plains
But never did I see him down upon his luck
Never once in all his days
Did I see that old smile fall from his face
And he said 'nothing lasts for long
only the earth and mountains are bound to remain
And I am setting like the sun
Won't you dance in my shadows to see me on my lonesome way'
So I take my chance and sail as far as I can go
There's no time to hesitate
For there is not a single moment left to waste
Cos you can spend a life-time searching up and down
Keeping your good eye closed
Tell me who you gonna blame if you stay and miss that boat
Cos you know nothing lasts for long
Only the earth and the mountains are bound to remain
And I am setting like the sun
Won't you dance in my shadows to see me on my lonesome way

Of Dukes and Kings
04:06
|
|||
Out on the river bank
Two men running from the law
They were caught in quite a fix
I couldn't help but help um out of it
And that night these vagrants told me
They'd a secret to declare
Said that they were born of royal kin
One was a duke and one a king
So don't you wave your pride around no more
You can lay them airs down at the door
Cos you never know which low down folk
May turn out to be nobles after all
And pretty soon they started to
Act the way nobles do
Had me serve them night and day
For no food and for no wage
And once every dirty drop
Of their luck it had run dry
They were mighty quick to up and flee
Took everything they could from me
So don't you wave your pride around no more
You can lay them airs down at the door
Cos it seems to me these dukes and kings
Ain't nothin' much but low down cheats and frauds
